Access Control Systems for Homes & Businesses

Keys get lost, copied and shared. Access control replaces them with a fingerprint, card or code — and logs exactly who came in, and when. Here's how it works and where it pays off.

A key is a weak link: it can be lost, copied, lent out, or simply not returned when an employee or helper leaves. Access control fixes all of that. Instead of a key, people enter with a fingerprint, a card, a code or their phone — and the system records every single entry. For a home it means total control over who comes and goes; for a business it means secured areas and a clear log of movement. Here's everything you need to know.

How access control works

At each controlled door there's a reader (fingerprint, card or keypad) connected to an electric lock. When someone presents a valid credential, the door releases and the event is logged with a time stamp. You add or remove people centrally — so when someone should no longer have access, you revoke it instantly, with no locks to change.

The credential types

01

Fingerprint (biometric)

Nothing to carry or lose, and hard to fake — ideal for main entrances and sensitive areas.

02

Card / fob

Fast and convenient for staff and families; easy to issue and revoke.

03

Keypad / code

No hardware to hand out; codes can be changed anytime.

04

Phone / app

Open the door and grant temporary access to a guest from your phone.

Where access control pays off

The real power of access control isn't just keeping people out — it's knowing exactly who came in, and when.
🔐 Sedra tip: integrate access control with your CCTV and intercom so an entry can be matched to camera footage and managed from one app. See our security systems.

Frequently asked questions

What is an access control system?

It's a system that controls and records who can open a door — using a fingerprint, card, code or phone instead of a key — and logs every entry.

Can access control work with my smart home?

Yes. We integrate it with CCTV, intercom and the smart home so you manage entry, cameras and lighting from one app.

What happens during a power cut?

We can specify fail-safe or fail-secure locks plus battery backup, so the system behaves exactly as you need it to in an outage.
