A security camera is only worth having if it gives you a usable picture when you actually need it — clear enough to recognise a face, working in the dark, covering the right angle, and with footage you can find later. Too many homes have cameras that tick a box but fail in practice. This guide walks you through the five things that separate real protection from a false sense of it.
1. Resolution — can you actually see detail?
Resolution decides whether footage shows a clear face and number plate or a useless blur. For a home, go for Full HD (1080p) at minimum; 2K or 4K is better for wide areas like a driveway or garden where you need to zoom in on detail.
2. Night vision — because most incidents happen after dark
A camera that blinds out or goes black at night is worthless. Look for strong infrared or, better, colour night vision so you keep detail and colour even in low light. This single factor is where cheap cameras fail hardest.

3. Indoor vs outdoor
- Outdoor cameras must be weatherproof (sun, dust, rain) and built for range and night vision at the gate, driveway and perimeter.
- Indoor cameras are smaller and discreet, for entrances, stairs or main rooms.
- Avoid using an indoor camera outdoors — it won't survive an Egyptian summer.
4. Storage — where does the footage live?
Footage is stored on a recorder (DVR/NVR) and/or the cloud. What matters is how many days you keep before it overwrites. More cameras and higher resolution need more storage. We size it so you always have enough history — and can add local backup so nothing is lost in an outage.
5. Remote viewing & smart alerts
Modern systems stream live and recorded footage to your phone from anywhere, and send a notification when they detect real motion — not every passing cat. If you travel or spend time away, this is non-negotiable.
Don't buy a camera — buy a system. Coverage, clarity, storage and alerts working together is what actually keeps you safe.
Frequently asked questions
How many cameras does a villa need?
It depends on the layout, but typically you cover the gate, main entrances, garden, driveway and any blind corners. A free survey determines the exact number.
Do I need internet for CCTV to work?
Recording works locally without internet. You need it only for remote viewing on your phone. We can add local storage so footage is never lost.
Can cameras integrate with my smart home?
Yes — we tie cameras, intercom and alarms into one app alongside your lighting and other systems.
